Upsilon Gallery presents an exhibition dedicated to André de Dienes’ unique and intimate images of Marilyn Monroe to coincide with the centenary of her birth. Bringing together a body of work produced between 1945 and 1956, the exhibition offers an opportunity to reconsider Monroe not as a fixed cultural icon, but as a figure in continual formation.
De Dienes’ earliest images of Monroe showcase the star as a young Norma Jeane, before her transformation into the glamorous movie star. His photographs trace the creation of one of the most enduring American symbols, Marilyn Monroe; they also offer an unparalleled closeness as the photographer and actress forged a symbiotic creative relationship.
André Dienes: Beyond Monroe reveals the enduring power of de Dienes’ photographs, with a compelling meditation on identity, visibility, and the instability of representation.

Featuring photographs by Alfred Wertheimer and André de Dienes, the exhibition showcases photographs of Marilyn and Elvis on the cusp of superstardom.
