On the centennial of Marilyn Monroe’s birth, the National Portrait Gallery in London presents Marilyn Monroe: A Portrait, exploring the life, career, and legacy of the star through portraits created by some of the greatest photographers and artists of the 20th and 21st century.
André de Dienes’ portraits of Monroe feature in the exhibition alongside that of Cecil Beaton, Richard Avedon, Inge Morath, Milton Greene, and Philippe Halsman among others.
The exhibition will foreground Monroe’s collaborative approach to image-making and her creative agency. De Dienes’ portraits offer some of the earliest photographs of Monroe before her ascent to superstardom as a young model named Norma Jeane; his later photographs demonstrate her physical transformation into the glamorous star she would become.
The corresponding catalogue, Marilyn Monroe: A Portrait features de Dienes’ images on the cover.

Featuring photographs by Alfred Wertheimer and André de Dienes, the exhibition showcases photographs of Marilyn and Elvis on the cusp of superstardom.
