Getty Acquisition: Fred W. McDarrah

MUUS Collection is thrilled to announce the acquisition of three Fred W. McDarrah photographs focusing on the history of the gay rights movement by the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, California. As the resident photographer for the Village Voice, McDarrah photographed countless protests and demonstrations during his tenure at the Voice, but it is his photographs capturing the LGBTQ+ community that remain some of his most impactful. Included in the acquisition is McDarrah’s image of the “Sip-In”, a pivotal moment in the fight for equality that was inspired by the civil rights movement’s sit-ins. Two other photographs comprise the acquisition, one depicting a famed drag contest known as the “Miss All-American Camp Beauty Pageant” in the late 1960s, and one depicting an AIDS march in the late 1980s.
